Social Media Strategy: Content Buckets

Social media can be a powerful tool for any athlete or brand. As a professional athlete, you must have a strategy for your social media. This will help save you a ton of time, reduce anxiety and make social media seem less overwhelming.

If you’ve ever found yourself saying, “I know I can be better on social media…” then please keep reading.

Today we are going to introduce a framework for how to post on social media that will make your life 10x easier. Sounds good right?

First, we are going to introduce the concept of “Content Buckets” and why you need them. Miller Digital describes content buckets as:

How to Choose Content Buckets for your Brand and Make Social Media Easier

Content buckets are the core topics you focus on to differentiate your brand from others. It’s the idea of creating 2-4 key topics that you always talk about to establish yourself as an expert in that area.

If you’re talking about a bunch of different topics and are all over the place with your content, your audience will become confused as to what you do and you will lose the key piece to establishing yourself as an authority on a topic. You will also hinder your ability to gain new followers.

You want to become the person that if you had a friend looking for advice on a specific topic, you’d say “Hey, you should check out ______ because she is amazing at it!”

The nice part about being a professional athlete is that you are already one of the best in the world at something - most people, brands or businesses are not. So you have an easy place to start.

The below exercise is a quick and effective way to narrow down what’s important to you and to your audience.

Let’s get into it: Content Buckets.

Step 1: Brainstorm!

Write down every topic that excites you about your brand, lifestyle, hobbies, business interests or sport. The topics can be related or unrelated to what you currently post about.

Below is an example of what a Health and Fitness Coach may brainstorm (image from Miller Digital):

Step 2: Narrow it down

Have a look at your list and pick 4-6 topics that relate to your brand, your business and the direction you want it to go. Keep in mind what your audience would like to know or learn more about.

Step 3: Go in-depth

Now, look at those 4-8 topics and pick 2-3 topics that excite you the most. Ask yourself which of those brainstorm topics could you talk about all day long?

Remember that these content buckets need to be topics you’re excited about, too, because otherwise you won’t produce content for them on a consistent basis if you dread talking about it.

Once you have your content buckets selected, the next step is creating content ideas for them!
