Sponsorship tips; Red Bull sports marketing is hiring

Good morning.

Hello from Uncle Yung 👋

The 2024 Super Bowl served as an epic close to the NFL season. I actually really enjoyed watching the game from start to finish, despite dozing off on the couch during the 1st quarter.

Overall I thought these were some of the better commercials as well. And kudos to Temu who ran not one but THREE Super Bowl ads. Score one for the little guys ha (womp womp).

Some fun facts related to sponsorship, the NFL and things we can apply to our own sales toolkit:

  1. The ad that scored the highest (6.68 pts according to Ad Meter) was State Farm's "Like a Good Neighbaaa!" featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito (my personal hero). Grabbing the silver was Dunkin's ad with 6.52 pts. Bronze went to KIA's "Perfect 10" ad with 6.36 pts. Personally I loved the KIA ad because of it's Olympic sports connection, followed closely by BMW's "Talkin Like Walken" ad. POW!

  2. Selling sponsorships in the form of categories: The NFL does an exceptional job of this. Everything that can be sold is marketed as it's own "category" for purchase. Official Beverage Sponsor. Official Technology Partner. Official Sponsor of Left Handed Scissors Partner. How you package and present an opportunity to the market can help raise the value of that product significantly. It's a huge reason why CG Sports created our branding service, Brand Camp, which all of our athletes and properties customers (teams, companies) go through. Interestingly, 8 NFL teams make up nearly 40% of the total sponsorship revenue (nearly $460 million) for teams. Those teams are: Falcons, Rams, 49ers, Cowboys, Patriots, Raiders, Eagles and Vikings. Sorry, Chiefs.

  3. Diversify what and how sponsors can spend with you: The average spend by a top 10 NFL team sponsor is $50 million. These are companies such as: Anheuser-Busch InBev, AT&T, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, SeatGeek, Ticketmaster, Molson Coors and Verizon. When I go to an NFL game I am always fascinated by how many different ways teams offer exposure for their sponsors. Athletes and teams in the Olympic space can pull from this and beef up their own offerings to the market. This is why it's crucial to have fundamental sponsorship items such as merchandise, websites, newsletters, podcasts, social media channels, camps/clinics, in-person appearances - to name a few. These are all revenue channels that will help you earn, once you do that big thing on the field.

For many, Valentine's Day is a day of love, but, since 2018, there has been grief, loss, and a number of painful emotions associated with it as well. Today is the sixth anniversary of the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, which horrifically claimed the lives of 17 individuals

One way to navigate the emotions of this painful anniversary is through writing. Carla Albano, author of Soul of a Swimmer, has published a heartfelt reflection on the sixth anniversary of the horrific shooting.

The Importance of Monthly Meetings

Last week, the Publishing team at CG Sports had our monthly meeting. This meeting is fun because we're all "together" for a period of time and we get to truly enjoy and appreciate everyone's role in real time.

If your team doesn't already have an established pattern of meetings (weekly, biweekly, monthly), here's why you should be implementing them:

  • An established timeframe (monthly) is manageable. Each of us wear a lot of hats at CG Sports, so daily or weekly meetings for our publishing team isn't a reasonable expectation. This gives us time to provide meaningful updates when we do meet, while also allowing us to dedicate time and energy to our other projects.

  • It holds people accountable. Let's be honest: it's much easier to ignore/postpone your boss's request for an update when it's happening via email. Meetings (in-person or on Google meet/something similar) provide a level of accountability that ensures we are all doing our part to keep our clients happy and maintain project timelines.

  • It reaffirms the rhythm of business. This is our time to check in with each other and share updates on projects, ask for insight regarding a project, make plans for projects, etc. This is valuable collaboration time and we do not waste it.

Some meetings may be long, some meetings may be short. The important thing is to check in.
