Writer’s block, sharks, and merch - OH MY!

Good morning.

Before we jump into the week, I'm excited to share that we have a new sponsor of the CG Sports weekly newsletter. Please welcome Sharkbanz!

Remember four years ago when all pools shut down? Many of us turned to the ocean to keep up our weekly swimming routine. If you're like me then you have an uneasy relationship with ocean swimming because you think you're going to get eaten by a shark.

This is where Sharkbanz comes in! Sharkbanz' wearable technology deters sharks by letting them know that you are not food and you're a friendly ocean goer. Talk about peace of mind!

I was introduced to the team at Sharkbanz through word of mouth (which continues to be our best marketing tool). I learned that I have several things in common with the co-founders:

1. We've lived abroad, which taught us about the importance of taking risks.
2. We launched our companies with the goal of trying to solve a problem in the market.
3. We share a love for the ocean, aquatics and helping customers.

So if you're an open water swimmer, surfer, paddler or even fishing enthusiast, make sure you check out more on Sharkbanz below!

February was a strong month for CG Sports and March is trending in that direction as well. Keep reading to see all the big things our team has been working on!

Following the race, Rosie exuded positivity and embraced the multifaceted nature of the sport, stating, "No race is defined by the results - there’s so much more that goes into having a performance and finding your best self. For me today, that was a result I’m proud of."

Tips for Combatting Writer's Block

Writer's block is real. It doesn't matter who you are or what you are trying to write (a book, article, super cool newsletter that you hope people are recommending to their sports-loving friends), writer's block can (and does) attack the best of us.

I've been a writer my whole life and loved it so much that I have made a career out of it. Along the way, I have definitely suffered from many writer's block episodes, but have learned to cope by utilizing a few different strategies:

  1. Stop. Drop. Write. I am always prepared for an idea to strike and will stop what I am doing to jot my ideas down. Confession: I keep a pad of sticky notes and a pen in my purse for this exact reason.

  2. No bad ideas, just first drafts. Writing is a messy process and is never perfect on the first try. Write your ideas, then go back and edit them with fresh eyes. But you will never have something to edit if you don't first write.

  3. Write out of order. This is my favorite advice to give to anyone who is writing any piece that has some length because it allows you to start with what you feel most confident in. Have a great conclusion? Feel most confident writing about the swim you completed last weekend than the first time you dove into a pool? Awesome! Work backwards! As you get more words on the page, then you can go back and fill in the gaps as your confidence grows.

Writing is a process and needs to be treated as such. Know when to push yourself. Know when to take breaks. But most importantly, enjoy the writing process and don't let any writer's block episodes cause you stress.

MERCH DROP! This was a fun design to bring to life. We combined music, sports, and lifestyle for a fun spin on merch for Katie Grimes!

Orders are now open! 2024 LET'S GO!!

Sharkbanz

Used by open water swimmers worldwide to reduce the risk and train safer, Sharkbanz use patented magnetic technology developed by marine biologists to deter predatory shark species.

Co-founder Nathan Garrison first got the idea for Sharkbanz after a close friend was bit by a Bull Shark. Garrison explains, "As someone passionate about spending time in the ocean, I was determined to find a simple, effective, and affordable way to reduce the risk of an unwanted shark encounter. The proven science, research, and technology are the basis for all Sharkbanz products today.”

Sharkbanz products are the embodiment of almost two decades worth of peer-reviewed scientific research, including independent government testing on the use of magnetic technology as an active and effective shark deterrent

The Sharkbanz Team is based in Santa Barbara, CA and they regularly work with swim and surf events globally as their official safety partner.
